Our Wool

"From fleece to yarn in less than 50 miles"

The average flock size in the UK is small, around 350 sheep. By comparison in New Zealand and Australia this is around 10,000. This makes it important that British Farmers are able to come together through the British Wool Association to sell their wool. There are 8 depots in the UK collecting wool from farmers across the country. We get our wool from their Bradford depot which collects wool from surrounding farms across Yorkshire.

On arrival to the British Wool Association HQ in Bradford, the wool is hand graded. It is separated into 120 grades to ensure it's quality meets the standard for its desired use.
Just 2 miles down the road from Bradford, our wool is washed and cleaned.
Our wool then makes a short trip to the dye house in Huddersfield, where it is hank dyed. Hank dyeing is significantly more sophisticated than package dyeing and as a result achieves a softer and more voluminous finished product. Hank dyeing uses 80% less water than conventional methods and ensures 100% dye exhaustion, our natural colours; Airedale, Coverdale and Dentdale are not dyed at all.
Once dyed, our wool travels to Baildon to be spun. It is now a finished yarn that is ready to be knitted!

Finally, the yarn then makes its way to Leicester where it is knitted into jumpers! Our jumpers are knitted on a 7 gauge machine in 5 separate pieces, which are then hand linked together by Irene for a beautiful finish.
